ERIA Strengthens Regional Energy Cooperation and Decarbonisation Efforts at the 19th EAS Energy Ministers Meeting
Kuala Lumpur, 17 October 2025: ERIA, in its capacity as the Asia Zero Emission Center, participated in the 19th East Asia Summit (EAS) Energy Ministers Meeting held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Chaired by YAB Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation of Malaysia, the meeting convened energy ministers and senior officials from across the region to advance energy co-operation and accelerate the transition toward a sustainable, secure, and low-carbon future. The Ministerial Meeting followed the EAS Energy Cooperation Task Force (EAS ECTF) Preparatory Meeting on 17 September 2025, in which ERIA also participated.
ERIA President Tetsuya Watanabe presented the institute’s ongoing efforts to support the region’s energy transition under three strategic pillars: decarbonisation roadmaps, sector-specific actions in power, mobility, and industry, and market enablers such as transition finance and carbon markets. He noted that ERIA currently oversees nearly 100 energy-related projects across ASEAN and East Asia.
President Watanabe also highlighted ERIA’s collaboration with ASEAN partners in advancing the ASEAN Power Grid, deepening regional electricity market integration, and promoting emerging technologies such as hydrogen and carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS). He further shared progress on ERIA’s initiatives in bioenergy and electric mobility, including the development of the Electric Vehicle Battery Passport.
On the sidelines of the meeting, ERIA held bilateral discussions with representatives from Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Viet Nam, and Australia, as well as international partners including the FutureCoal Global Alliance, the Energy Research Institute Network (ERIN), and the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (IEEJ). These engagements explored opportunities to strengthen collaboration and align regional energy transition initiatives.
President Watanabe reaffirmed ERIA’s commitment to advancing EAS energy co-operation through research, capacity building, and policy dialogue – supporting the region’s shared vision of a secure, interconnected, and sustainable energy future.
