This book examines how countries across ASEAN and East Asia are designing, implementing, and refining carbon pricing mechanisms to meet increasingly ambitious climate commitments. It also explores opportunities for regional market integration, policy harmonisation, and cross-border co-operation in support of decarbonisation efforts.

The volume is organised into three sections: developments in ASEAN Member States, comparative international experiences, and prospects for regional integration. Contributors provide in-depth analyses of national carbon pricing policies, ranging from carbon taxes to emerging emissions trading systems, while assessing the institutional, regulatory, and market factors that influence their effectiveness. The book also draws on international experiences, including Australia’s Safeguard Mechanism, Japan’s carbon pricing initiatives, and approaches to achieving 2030 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets. Building on these lessons, the volume evaluates ASEAN’s readiness for greater market interoperability and the development of regional carbon market linkages.

Bringing together diverse perspectives from across the region, this book offers valuable insights for scholars of climate finance, energy policy, and environmental economics. It will also serve as a useful resource for policymakers, practitioners, and stakeholders seeking to strengthen climate governance and advance co-ordinated, effective carbon pricing strategies in Asia and the Pacific.
