Building and Reshaping the Supply Chain of Semiconductor Industries in ASEAN and East Asia

Project Overview

This study examines the transformation of the semiconductor supply chain in ASEAN and East Asia against the backdrop of intensifying US—China competition, technological shifts, and critical mineral dependencies. Semiconductors, valued at nearly US$600 billion in 2024 and projected to reach US$980 billion by 2029, are the backbone of digital economies, underpinning AI, EVs, 5G, and clean energy systems. ASEAN, with its robust assembly, packaging, and testing (APT) base, abundant mineral reserves, and rising investment in R&D, is emerging as a strategic hub in global value chains.

The study also highlights the vulnerabilities exposed by geopolitical frictions, supply risks, and export restrictions, while mapping ASEAN's comparative advantages across semiconductor segments. By analysing policy strategies, talent ecosystems, and regional co-operation, the study identifies pathways for ASEAN to move beyond downstream activities towards higher-value innovation, positioning the region as a resilient and competitive player in the next generation of the global semiconductor industry.
