Promoting Cyber Security for Distributed Energy Systems (DES) and Smart Grids in ASEAN

Project Overview

Distributed energy systems (DES), such as solar, wind, and biomass, are expected to play a significant role in decarbonisation, representing an investment opportunity of around US$34 billion by 2040.

However, increased reliance on distributed energy resources (DERs) also raises cybersecurity risks, particularly in connection with smart grids and bi-directional energy control. The IEC System Committee for Smart Energy is addressing these cybersecurity needs based on the ERAB Security Guidelines.

This project aims to balance energy security, decarbonisation, economic growth, and cybersecurity for the ASEAN region. As energy demand continues to rise, the adoption of renewable energy and new business models, such as energy resource aggregation, will be essential. The project also focuses on assessing current cybersecurity efforts for DERs in ASEAN and on developing an action plan to foster common understanding and effective guidelines across member states.
