Critical Minerals ASEAN Supply Chains

This volume focuses on policy and technological pathways for achieving sustainability in critical minerals supply chains. It integrates insights from resource modelling, systematic reviews, value chain analysis, and mineral development impact assessment to inform the design of effective and forward-looking policy frameworks.

The book examines the role of emerging technologies – such as artificial intelligence, alternative extraction and refining methods, and secondary mining – in improving the sustainability of critical minerals supply. These technological advances are assessed in the context of battery development and electric vehicle deployment, which are central to decarbonisation and carbon-neutral growth strategies.

Through carefully selected regional and country case studies, the volume analyses best-practice policies and strategies for addressing environmental, economic, and social risks across critical minerals value chains. The empirical contributions combine qualitative assessment with quantitative analysis, including econometric estimation where appropriate, to generate robust evidence.

The volume aims to derive actionable policy lessons for ASEAN as it works towards near net-zero emissions by 2050, while also offering insights relevant to other Asian economies, including China, India, and Australia. This book will be valuable to policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders seeking an evidence-based understanding of sustainable policy and technology options for critical minerals supply chains.
