Asia Zero Emission Center

Research on the Future Outlook for the Decarbonisation of the Steel Industry in Asia
Project Overview
The steel industry is a central focus due to its substantial CO₂ emissions – 2.6 gigatonnes annually, equivalent to 7% of global energy-related emissions – making the adoption of decarbonisation technologies especially critical.
The project has three main objectives:
- Identify and implement decarbonisation strategies suitable for Asia.
- Develop a long-term outlook for the future of steel industry decarbonisation and produce and guidelines for planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Disseminate findings through international collaboration and workshops.
Phase 1 activities include:
- conducting data analysis to support the Asia Steel Decarbonisation Outlook,
- drafting guidelines based on plant-level assessments, and
- gathering regional perspectives through seminars in ASEAN and India.
The overall aim is to promote economic growth alongside environmental sustainability, fostering a shared understanding between governments and industry stakeholders.
